Metering Valves

Metering Valves that are designed to provide accurate and stable control of flow rates in analytical, instrumentation, and research applications. It is a valve with infinite positioning and variable control that is capable of regulating the flow of fluid. A needle valve is a type of metering valve.

In an automotive hydraulic braking system, metering valve momentarily delays application of the front disk brakes until the rear drum brakes begin to act.Metering valves are multi-turn valves designed to regulate the flow of fluid. These valves generally have low flow rates and high pressure differentials.

Metering valve distributors are hydraulic resistors. The following factors affect the metered quantity:

  • Pump pressure
  • Operating viscosity of the oil
  • Geometry of the centralized lubrication system
  • Line cross-sections
  • Back pressures downstream of the metering valve distributor

Metering valve systems are often operated with Piston Pumps that distribute the pump's entire volume throughout the system with each delivery stroke. For the lubricant to be apportioned as desired it is necessary for the hydraulic resistance of the metering valves to be greater than the pressure losses in the tubing. Hydraulic metering valves are available in various designs to handle the respective quantity and viscosity:

  • as a fine annular gap
  • as a helical coiled rectangular cross section (helical coil)
  • as a sinter insert or felt insert

Besides non-adjustable metering valves, there are adjustable metering valve distributors allowing the flow rate to be individually regulated. Metering valve distributors are used for total loss lubrication systems and circulating lubrication systems.
