Vibratory feeders work at a speed of 4 to 5 metres per minute. However, with correct engineering, speeds of upto 14 metres are possible in case of vibratory feeders. These are called hi-speed vibratory feeders. The speed is increased by changing the angle of the spring plates and using high performance spring plates for the vibrators.

Vibratory Bowl Feeders are the most common devices used to feed individual components in Industrial Assembly Automation Applications. Vibratory Feeders are self-contained systems, comprising a specially tooled [Bowl Feeders|bowl feeder]] that orients the parts, a vibrating drive unit, upon which the bowl feeder is mounted, and a variable-amplitude control box. The bowl feeder, including an out feed accumulation track to convey parts along and discharge into the assembly machine comes in many shapes and sizes. The drive unit, available in both electromagnetic and pneumatic drives, vibrates the bowl feeder, forcing the parts to move up a circular, inclined track.

The track is designed to sort and orient the parts in consistent, repeatable positions. The track length, width, and depth are carefully chosen to suit the application and component shape and size. Special track coatings are applied according to shape size and material of the component which aids traction, damage to the product and lower acoustic levels. A variable speed control box is used for controlling the vibration of the bowl feeder and stops the flow of parts to the out feed track via sensors. Vibratory feeders are utilized by all industries including, the pharmaceutical, automotive, electronic, food, Fast Moving Consumable Goods (FMCG), packaging and metal working industries. It also serves other industries such as glass, foundry, steel, construction, recycling, pulp and paper, and plastics. Vibratory feeders offer a cost-effective alternative to manual labor, saving manufacturer’s time and labor costs. Several factors must be considered when selecting a parts feeder, including the industry, application, material properties and product volume.

The vibrator which drives the bowl is called Vibrating Drive Units. These can be from 65 mm diameter to upto 1200 mm diameter in case of electromechanical coil types.
Inline Vibratory Feeders are also called Linear Vibrators. The track which is fixed on the linear vibrator is called inline vibratory track. These are used to convey components from a vibratory bowl feeder to the point of usage. It results in a creation of a buffer which can help in providing buffer stock to ensure that the cycle time of the machine being fed is matched to the feed rate / speed of the vibratory bowl feeder. A good inline vibrator track should usually be machined from tool steel and hardened or else it can be in stainless steel. Tracks made of stainless steel last longer and are required especially for pharmaceutical components. Usually, a sensor should be fixed on the linear track which can switch on / off the vibratory bowl feeder which feeds components to the inline vibratory track. This way, the required feed rate will be matched with that of the vibratory bowl feeder. The length of the inline vibratory track is dependent upon the power and size of the linear vibrator. It can be from just 100 mm long to upto 1500 mm long for electro-mechanical vibratory feeders.
Types of feeding systems
*Bowl Feeders: consists of a bowl top with a spiral track inside the bowl. The component parts are delivered from the bottom of the bowl feeder up the track into the top of the feeder as the bowl vibrates. The parts are the positioned in the proper position. These parts are usually then fed on to a vibratory or air track
*Centrifugal Feeders:, have a conical central driven rotor surrounded by a circular bowl wall. The feeder separate component parts utilizing rotary force and the parts revolve with high speed and are pulled to the outside of the bowl.

Accessories
*Coatings: Bowl feeder coatings to minimise wear and tear, reduces noise and damage to parts.
*Sound enclosure/cover: A foam-lined structure that absorbs the noise created by the vibratory feeder. Reduce noise and protects against dust and contamination.
*Base plates: Enable easy mounting of the drive unit to the machine bed.
*Sensors: Minimum/maximum level control on a linear track.
*Hopper: Large, bulk container that stores material and regulates parts flow into the vibratory feeder system.
Inline Vibratory Feeders are also called Linear Vibrators. These are suitable for feeding bulk Powders or applications like Tea leaves, Coffee leaves etc. Trays, either in Stainless Steel or Mild Steel can be used on top of the linear vibrators for proper moment of the material. These tray can even be lined / coated with suitable material for proper abrasion resistance or to ensure that there is no damage or noise while the feeding takes place. The tray size is dependent upon the size and power of the linear vibrator. In case of electro-mechanical (coil type) linear vibrators, tray can be even upto a length of even 1 metre while the smallest can be even just 50 mm. The width too is dependent upon the power and size of the linear vibrator. It can be from 15 mm to upto 500 mm. Bulk Flow Rate is dependent upon the tray size and power of the linear vibrator. It can be as high as 25 Kgs. Per Minute. Linear Vibrators are also used for powering bulk hoppers for increasing the loading capacity. They can be used to reduce the replenishment time in case of loading to a vibratory bowl feeder. A suitable level controller is used to start / stop the linear vibrator when the level of components in the vibratory bowl feeder increases / reduces. This helps in reducing the time and effort required to replenish the vibratory bowl feeder.

A Centrifugal Feeder is a mechanical unit that can be used for feeding special components, which require very high speeds. It is a motorised equipment which works with a single phase or three phase motor driving the main rotating plate that picks up the components while moving forward. Due to gravity components get moved towards the periphery of the rotating disc. Orientation, if required for the components needs to be done while the disc is rotating. As the disc can be moved at very high speeds, high feeding rates upto even 50 meters per minute are possible.

Advantages
However, it is definitely a very poor cousin of the Vibratory Bowl Feeder. For any part where a particular orientation is required, feeding through a vibratory bowl feeder is the only alternative. The first major distinction is that in a Rotary feeder, the parts which can be fed through a Rotary feeder are limited to certain flat caps where the diameter is more than the height, needles and rollers where the length is more than the diameter and any face can come out etc. As against this, in a vibratory bowl feeder almost any type of component can be handled. Second and most significant disadvantage of a Rotary feeder is that due to the positive pressure generated because of the rotating disc, the parts being fed are thrown against each other and against the wall of the feeder. This can result in damages to the parts. Compared to this, the parts do not get damaged in a vibratory bowl feeder. Even brittle and delicate parts can be handled in a vibratory bowl feeder. Thirdly, the speed or feed rate in case of a Rotary feeder can be as high as 40 metres per minute while that of a vibratory bowl feeder can be at the most 12 metres per minute. This is the only advantage of a Rotary feeder. Price of a vibratory bowl feeder is also much substantially less than that of a Rotary feeder.
