Banbury Mixers

Banbury Mixers are used for mixing or compounding plastics and interspersing reinforcing fillers in a resin system.

Constructions

The mixer consists of two contra-rotating spiral-shaped blades encased in segments of cylindrical housings, intersecting so as to leave a ridge between the blades. The blades may be cored for circulation of heating or cooling media.

The Banbury mixer resembles a robust dough mixer in that two interrupted spiral rotors move in opposite directions at 30 to 40 rotations per minute. The shearing action is intense, and the power input can be as high as 1,200 kilowatts for a 250-kg (550-pound).

Applications

This intensive mixer has a wide range of applications, including in mixing and refining Raw materials, such as raw rubber, synthetic rubber, resin, asphalt, celluiese, PVC or EVA into even mixed stock.
